Authors, researchers and teachers came together to learn about and discuss methods for teaching reading and writing at the 56th Saturday Reunion of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project in early April.

On April 19th, Director of Budget and Planning, Steven Weinberg, presented the proposed Fiscal Year 2001 operating budget to the Teachers College community. This session was one of a series to get feedback from faculty, staff and Trustees before a final presentation of the budget to the Trustees in May.

The graduates at the Teachers College master's convocation will have the privilege of hearing four recipients of the Teachers College Medal for Distinguished Service speak at the May 16 convocation ceremony. The four medalists are James B. Hunt, Governor of North Carolina; Henry Louis Gates Jr., Director of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute of African-American Research at Harvard University; Ellen V. Futter, President of the American Museum of Natural History and former President of Barnard College; and Edward Zigler, Professor of Psychology at Yale University and renowned "father" of the Head Start program.

"I want to investigate the effects of employment on low-income single black mothers and their children. In particular, my dissertation, "When Current Welfare Recipients Become Employed," will examine mothers who have made or are making the transition from welfare to work, as well as how these transitions are associated with child-well being," said Phyllis Gyamfi, doctoral candidate in Developmental Psychology and Research Fellow at the Center for Young Children and Families.

Stein, who is a senior research scientist at the Center for Research on Women at Wellesley College, discussed her recent book Classrooms and Courtrooms: Facing Sexual Harassment in K-12 Schools.
