  In a study in the Journal of Curriculum and Supervision, Margaret Crocco and Steve Thornton, both Associate Professors of Social Studies and Education, examine what shapes current practices in secondary-level social studies classrooms in New York City, especially in those institutions characterized as "restructured."

• DC Summer Reading Campaign Chooses Book About TC Alumna

  In March, D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams and Mary Raphael, the city's library chief chose the title that they hope will be on everyone's reading list. The book, Having Our Say: The Delaney Sisters' First 100 Years, the best-selling 1993 oral history of the two sisters.

• Research in Nursing Conference

  On April 19, more than 300 people gathered at TC to attend the 39th Isabel Maitland Stewart Conference. This year's topic was "Innovations in Nursing Management, Education, and Administration."

• Africa in an Age of Globalization

  More than 100 participants attended a one-day conference on the effects of globalization and decentralization in Africa entitled, "Case Studies on Globalization and Decentralization in Education, Health and Land Reform in the Congo (D.R.C.), Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Beyond in the 21st Century."

• The 2002 Association of Arts Administrators Conference

  The Program in Arts Administration at TC and both the Performing Arts Administration and Visual Arts Administration Programs at The Steinhardt School of Education, New York University hosted the Annual 2002 AAAE Conference in New York City.

• US News Rankings: TC Takes Fourth

  In one of the most competitive rankings in the last several years four major schools of education were separated by five points for the lead rankings. Stanford University was rated number one (100), Harvard and UCLA were ranked two (96), and Teachers College was ranked number four (95).

• Breakfast (Lunch and Dinner) of Champions

  When balancing work, school and a family, cooking dinner can seem impossible. Imagine preparing 125,000 meals each day on top of a mountain that is 8 to 10,000 feet above sea level where there are no kitchens, no supermarkets and no roads leading to the top. That's exactly what TC Doctoral Student in Adult and Organizational Learning John Avella did over his winter break. He worked with about 4,000 people to prepare all the meals that fed staff, volunteers, athletes, guests, and sponsors at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

• Norma Fredrick Fischer

  Norma Fredrick Fischer, 91, the wife of President Emeritus John H. Fischer, died on March 22nd at Fox Hill Village, their retirement home in Westwood, Massachusetts.

  Mary Culleton (third from left), who was a Library Assistant, surrounded by union members, family and friends at her retirement party. She retires after working at TC for 31 years.
